  • "TOUGH CROWD"

“Tough Crowd” is a song, to me, that is just sort of a love letter to the fans. I mean it’s- you know, I think, for me, going on stage every night, we kind of have the best view in the house, seeing everybody out there. You know, it could be college kids over here, a couple over here, and then you got this big burly dude that looks like a truck driver or something, you know. You start playing these ballads, and you see this guy, this big guy, he’s over there singing every word to a ballad. It’s just like we got the best seat in the house. You know, looking out and knowing people are there to see us and see our show. It’s a little bit of a play on words, you know, “tough crowd,” tough meaning good. And so, yeah, it’s just a love letter to the fans, man. Our fans have been amazing supporting us over the last almost 20 years, and this is their song.

  • "LET YOUR BOYS BE COUNTRY"

We shot the music video for “Let Your Boys Be Country,” which I had my son in the video and go hang out with him for the day. I think the video really portrays what we’re trying to say in the song, and you know, just about simpler parts of life. You know, everything doesn’t revolve around all these crazy things that are going on in the world. It’s just like man, make it simple, let it be enjoyable, whether it’s just going outside and playing sports, or going to hunt, fish, whatever it is. Just let them be innocent for now and figure it out as they go along.

  • "KNEW YOU'D COME AROUND"

“I Knew You’d Come Around” was a song that actually came in really late in the process of recording this album. It was one of the last songs we got, and actually, we had even thought about holding this song back and maybe putting it on the next album, but it was kind of- felt like something we didn’t have for the record that we kind of needed. It’s just a song about, like, you’re going through a breakup and you’re like “Man, I know that I’m going to see this girl, I know that she’s going to pop her head up at some point, I don’t want to deal with this right now.” And sure enough, she shows up at the worst time when he’s like- moment of weakness, he’s drinking, he’s in a bar, and he’s like “Man, I knew you’d come around in my weakest moment.” You know, I feel like that’s a song that everybody can relate to that’s been in a relationship over the years, you know, that’s going through a breakup or something. Really cool song written by a couple of guys in my band and John Morgan, who’s another artist, writer, friend of ours who’s amazing, and yeah, this was a collaboration from those guys.

  • "HUNGOVER IN A HOTEL"

“Hungover in a Hotel” is a song we wrote that- actually, it was the day after we shot the “Try That In A Small Town” video. I had an overnight shoot and an early morning flight, so I’m at the airport getting ready to get on a plane. Tully, my bass player, called me. He goes, “Man, we got a writing appointment, and I have zero ideas.” He was tired cause we’d been shooting a video all night, and he goes, “Man, I’m tired, if you’ve got any ideas, feel free to send them.” And I just was in the airport, and I felt like crap, so I said “Man, I’m hungover in an airport.” Then I thought a minute, and I sent him another text, I said “Actually, ‘hungover in a hotel’ rolls off the tongue a little better.” And so, right there while I’m waiting on my plane, he and I start talking and just texting and trying to kind of map out what the song would be. You know, it’s more of a song about, you know, being in a place, like being at this crossroads one night that you’re just kind of like “Alright, you know, I could go one of two ways. I could go the way I’ve done it in the past that doesn’t work over well, or I can get it together and, you know, go home.” I love the song – the way we came about it was kind of weird because I think we were kind of delirious, but it worked out being a really cool song for the record.

  • "TRY THAT IN A SMALL TOWN"

I mean, “Try That In A Small Town,” I don’t know what you say about this song that hasn’t been discussed already. I mean, to me, this is a song that’s about you know when you take a look around the country and see what’s going on. You know, it’s just- I’m not cool with things that I’ve seen over the last few years and the way people act and react to things. I think it was something that had been on my mind for a while, and then to finally have a song like that to express how you feel about it, it was something that I wanted to say and felt like needed to be said. You know, with a song like that comes a lot of controversy, but I think if you got the message and weren’t trying to read too far into this or that, I think you got the point, you got what I was trying to say.

  • "WHISKEY DRINK"

“Whiskey Drink” was one of the songs I feel like really set the tone for the album. It was one of the early ones that we got that I remember thinking “Okay this is cool, it’s different, it’s like new territory for us a little bit. Like it’s familiar, but it’s not the same.” And I just remember falling in love with that song when that chorus hits. It’s just like all of a sudden, I am all in. You know, the chorus is where the money’s at. Lyrically, it’s great, but it’s also like an earworm that just gets in there and you can’t get the song out of your head, and it was really one of the songs that helped establish sort of a direction we were going to go for the album, and you know, sonically and all those things, but “Whiskey Drink” was a pivotal song, I think, for the album.

  • "WHOSE REARVIEW"

“Whose Rearview” is probably my favorite song on the album- another song that I feel like is just written really well, really clever. And it’s like, going through a breakup- “Whose Rearview” and “Whiskey Drink” were the two songs that I think kind of came in off the same session. We got those songs, and that was sort of the lightning rod that kind of took the album, and it was like okay, we have these two killer songs. This clearly is going to be sort of the vibe of the album, and so that was another really really important song for the album and what would ultimately get written after that to kind of go along with some of those songs.

  • "I'M OVER YOU"

I remember seeing the title, and there used to be a Keith Whitley song called “I’m Over You,” and I was like, man, I don’t know. I get kind of weird sometimes when I see a title that I’ve seen before. Sometimes, it’s kind of a turn off to me a little bit. In this case, I listened to the song, and it was just the complete opposite of what I thought it was going to be. It’s like, “Hey, I’m over you, I’m over this relationship,” whatever. Well, this song’s more like “I’m over you not being at my house, I’m over not being able to spend all my time with you, I’m over, you know, not waking up with you,” and all this kind of stuff. So it’s just a completely different play on words and a completely different direction than I thought the song was going to go. You know, it’s a little more track heavy, loop heavy, which to me is cool, makes it sound different. It’s kind of a change up from some of the other songs on the album. This song ended up growing on me a lot, and ended up cutting it and cut a killer track on it.

  • "RATHER WATCH YOU"

“Rather Watch You” – this is a song that I can definitely relate to. You know, it kind of made me think about my relationship with my wife and how we spend a lot of our time and stuff. I love the song, but I recorded it more for her because it made me think of her. So yeah, it’s like, I could do all these other things, but like “I’d rather just sit there and watch you cause you look amazing” kind of thing. So, ultimately, that’s it- really cool song, another one that sonically is just really different than, you know, most everything else on the record, so it does kind of break up, you know, some of the other more up-tempo type songs and things like that.

  • "BREAKUP BREAKDOWN"

“Breakup Breakdown” - that’s one of those songs, you know, it’s not like a true tempo, but it plays like really aggressive, and there’s something about it that’s like, you know, basically I’m going through a breakup breakdown is kind of the gist of it. It’s like, this guy is going through a breakup and he’s just taking it pretty hard and losing his mind. I said this the other day – it’s like a breakup song but it makes you feel good, if that’s even possible. You guys going through a breakup, it may not make you feel good, but that’s kind of how it makes me feel.

  • "GET AWAY FROM YOU"

“Get Away From You” is, to me, you know, I always like to have some of these songs on an album that are things that slow it down a little bit more, allow me to be able to show off a little more vocally. I always say, like, these are the kind of songs that- all the females will like this song, right? It’s more that kind of thing. I can play- like for my wife, I can take it in and I’m like “Okay, I already know the song that you’re going to like, it’s this one, but I need you to listen to the other songs, too, and tell me what you think of those,” you know, cause this one’s kind of a given. Females like these kind of songs, I get that, and I like to sing these songs too so that’s why we typically have one of these, or at least try to put something like this on every album.

  • "CHANGING BARS"

“Changing Bars” to me is just a really cool song, man. Cool idea. I felt like very clever, and again, going back to just lyrically I think on this album, man, it’s just like top to bottom, every song on this album, to me I think it’s like one of the best lyric albums we’ve ever put out ever, top to bottom, and so this is one of those. Just a really cool song, and like I said, great idea, and another one of those that sets the tone, I think, for what this album is.

  • "FROM THIS BEER ON"

“From This Beer On” might be my favorite chorus on the entire album. Once that chorus kicks in, to me, it might be my favorite chorus on the entire album. And another one of those songs, you know, where you’re kind of like “Man, this has probably been kind of written before, something along these lines.” You know, “From this beer on, I’m going to let her go, I’m going to start doing all these other things.” You mean well, but you know you’re not going to do all that stuff. So, to me, if I had a sleeper song on the album, it would be “From This Beer On” because there is something about that one that I keep going back to. I don’t know what it is about this song, but there is something that’s really hooky and catchy about this thing, and that’s my sleeper for the album.

  • "HIGHWAY DESPERADO"

“Highway Desperado” – the way that song came about was kind of weird because- it came about because we needed a name for the tour. We needed a tour title. We were getting ready to announce our tour, and we didn’t have a name, and so I just sat there and came up with the phrase “Highway Desperado” just because it kind of feels like that’s what we do. Instead of riding into town on horses, we ride in on the bus, and we go in, make a lot of noise, jump back on the horses – which is the bus, and go to the next town, and do the same thing, so I kind of feel a little like a desperado. We’ve spent more of our life on the highway than we have at home, probably, so we went and shot the tour poster, and I kind of had an idea of what I wanted that to be. When I saw that picture, I texted Tully and Kurt and said, “Hey man, this could be a really cool song title, too.” Ended up making it the album title, and I don’t know, I couldn’t think of anything better for an album title than that cause I was just like it doesn’t get any better, so that’s why you got "Highway Desperado."
